Circle Magic with Donald K.
Supplies:
Circle Magic:
This is a pattern I’ve seen by a few designers, but I’m giving credit to The Missouri Star Quilt Company because they bought the rights to the magic circle acrylic templates. We are not using them, Because the last thing most quilters want are more rulers. What you will need is:
- At least two contrasting fabrics. The yardage depends on how many front and backing circles you cut. The above picture is mug rug size. I plan on making it bigger during the class.
Templates will be handed out during the April meeting, if not in attendance contact to receive
- 4 ½” square ruler. If you don’t have one, contact Donald at [email protected] (Preferably before the April meeting) and he will give you a paper template you can trace on plastic.
- Favorite removable marking tools. (I used friction pens)
- Awl, chopstick, Purple Thang, or other tool for making sure circles stay round.
- Fusible Batting (optional). If you’re making
- Sewing machine and other basic sewing notions/ supplies
Note: You do not need backing or binding fabric for this project. You don’t even need batting if you’re making a table runner or place mats. The only thing you need is the same amount of front circles (floral fabric in picture above) and backing circle fabrics (the scrappy tone-on-tones)
Make it Modern: Use solid colors and I’ll show you a way to make the outer scallops or circles a clean line instead.
Prepwork: Please have circles cut out (or at least traced if your’re worried about bias) before class. Also if you decide to use fusible batting, please fuse that to the wrong side of one of your backing circles.
This was my first attempt at making a Circle Magic Quilt. The first thing I thought of when I looked at it is that the red backing circles look like lips. My biggest suggestion is, don’t use red, pink, or skin colored fabric.
Using only two colored fabrics also looks amazing, especially if the backing circles are a dark color to hide those seams.
Lastly, These circles have regular low loft batting in them, which makes the lips pucker more.
