Bringing Architecture to Life – Rachel Derstine

A PowerPoint lecture featuring my architecture quilts.  My recent move to Philadelphia has inspired a new series of quilts featuring favorite buildings and vistas.  I include the techniques used to create these quilts in the lecture. Members: Free Non-members: $ 5

Workshop:(Zoom): ​March 15, 2025 and March 22, 2025 12:30 pm EST- 3:30 pm EST Architecture Quilts

A full day workshop (which we split into 2-3hr. sessions) creating a quilt based on an architecture photo.   Do you have a favorite building you’d like to recreate?  We will be doing fused applique using a picture that has meaning to you. Rachel would like you to pick something that brings a smile to your face whether it be the barn you raised cows in or a pier you visited with your grandpa or a dock that housed your family boat. The class will work on how to create proper perspective and how to infuse some vibrant color into your buildings to create a beautiful masterpiece. Members: $ 35.00 Non-members: $ 40.00

Basic hand sewing supplies:
Scissors
Needle (size #9 or #10 is easiest)
Thread 

  • At least 8 pieces of fabric 2 1/2″ square or one piece approximately 10″ square, one showing in pic has 8, larger one that is easier to piece will need 14
  • If you have washable fabric glue stick, like Sewline or any other washable glue stick, that will be needed and helpful.
  • An optional binding clip, just 1 little plastic clip, is also recommended.

Microwave Bowl with Marge
Equipment and supplies needed for this project per bowl.

ALL FABRIC, BATTING AND THREAD MUST BE 100% COTTON  

Sewing machine with all cotton thread on the spool and bobbin. 
Rotary cutter and mat
At least a 12”  ruler
Straight pins
Marking pen that can mark on batting

ALL COTTON FABRIC – 2 Coordinating fabrics
One 10” by 10” square piece of plain fabric or with a small same color pattern
One  10” by 10” square piece of coordinating color fabric with medium size pattern
The guild will provide batting for 1 bowl, if you would like to make more please have
2  12” by 12” square pieces of light COTTON batting (Wrap-n-Zap) works well.
