Workshop: Intro to Japanese Boro Stitching — Japanese Boro Stitching began long ago as a way of mending clothing, but it has evolved into the loveliest of art forms now done by many as a daily practice.
This mindful hand stitching is pared down to the basics using very simple stitches. The beauty of the work evokes a great appreciation for simple pleasures as you learn the design, construction, and stitching on a square compiled of a variety of fabrics. As a part of this process, you will learn to do hand embroidery without a hoop which leads to an ease of stitching and vastly improved results.
In this 3 hour workshop you will have plenty of time to experiment and play with this wonderful art form as you create your own 8” Stitch Sampler. You can use the examples provided as your inspiration or create your own original version.

Supplies Needed
One pre-based quilt sandwich in a yard x WOF in solid neutral color layered with batting and backing. This one yard x WOF working piece can be split into 2 for ease of use. Baste with your choice of methods, but do not spray baste IN class.
Top and bobbin thread of choice. Due to high density quilting, thinner thread is recommended, of at least 50 weight or thinner.
Sewing machine set up for free motion machine quilting with extension table, hopping foot, and ability to drop feed dogs, cords, petal, extensions, etc.
Standard free motion equipment (ie: gloves or grippy hoops)
Thread snips, marking utensils that will show on fabric like blue line pen or chalk
An additional “final project” fabric sandwich. The size should be small, like a fat quarter or table placemat size. Any fabric that will allow visible quilting is fine, with thread you enjoy. You will create a small composition based on the design theory of class with your favorite class designs. When finished, it can be bound, or turned into a small zippered bag.
